En 2001, la végétation a disparu de la Terre suite à une guerre nucléaire. Pour remédier à cet état de fait, on cultive dans l'espace de grandes serres en espérant ensuite les réimplanter librement à la surface. C'est à cette tâche que se consacre le botaniste Freeman Lowell à bord du vaisseau spatial Valley Forge. Mais un jour, la décision tombe : les serres doivent être détruites pour des raisons économiques...
