Tout juste retraité de la police de San Francisco après 40 ans de bons et loyaux services, Robert Dacier accepte toutefois de superviser une nouvelle affaire. Son enquête le conduit à Denver où un complexe immobilier doit être construit sur une ancienne décharge industrielle. Dans le même temps, l'assistante de Dacier est soupçonnée d'avoir assassiné son fiancé et sa maîtresse. Le crime aurait été commis après une crise de jalousie.
